Shelter and Protect: An exploration of Architecture and Space

For this Final Project I looked at the ideas of shelter and protection. I explored these aspects through the use of architecture and how I could alter people’s perceptions of what shelter, protection and space are. I used techniques of 3D sculpture and mark making to develop my responses. Through development work I began to explore the ideas of my own personal space incorporating my own body into these creations.

My final pieces ‘Fragile Confinement’ and ‘Open Diamond’ are based on my experimentation focusing on how I can alter the themes listed in my title.

Rupture a Room and Reconstructing/ Deconstructing Narratives

This section shows a collection of small projects I created during my Foundation Year at Art College. In these two projects I had to create my own brief and develop a research stance on the various topics.

I explored the ideas of space as an abstract and conceptual forms. I have looked closely at how the spaces are used and how it can be developed. Both of these projects work cohesively together, exploring not only the built environment but also the theory of what defines space. I engaged with how space is perceived and adapts differently to each user.

Examples of Drawing the Human Form - Life Drawing

Throughout my studies at art college I undertook several extra-curricular classes in life drawing. Each class was slightly different exploring how to represent the human body through various different medias and processes. Some of these include mark making, collage, print making and fine art techniques. Examples of the fine art techniques we used where the use of verbs to describe the body and using sound to map the bodies movement.

These extra-curricular classes helped to improve my observational drawing skills as well engaging with the human body and its interaction to space.

Exploring Sculpture

During my Foundations Studies I created work based on Sculpture and 3D forms. Here I have looked at how I could push the boundaries of the cardboard to create a mask which fitted and was stable, this took some engineering as well as creating a base to form the design around (this can be seen on the sketchbook page).

Observational Drawings and Exploring Natures Textures

In this section I have shown my ability to create interesting and unusual observational drawings. For the first images I have used more traditional techniques such as fine line pen and watercolours. For the last image I have used a more unusual technique of Cyanotype image making where I layered acetate images over the top of each other to create a vibrant form of mark making.

Also for this section I explored the use of textiles techniques to re create my own version of the texture of bark. I also used many different materials as I wanted to explore how this could change and develop the final outcome.
